One Hundred Years of Solitude

Ask me something   I am a final year student at Edinburgh College of Art, and this is my imagined stage adaptation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's epic novel.

And my name is April.

My new professional blog →

I’ve created a separate blog exclusively for my own costume work, sort of an online portfolio type thing.

It will show the best of my work from college and all film/fashion/theatre projects that I have been involved with as I add to my CV.

Take a look!

Illustrations from my final year costume design project.

They haven’t scanned awfully well, gold leaf for one is better in the flesh, but I’ve tried to tart them up on photoshop!

Progress on Amaranta Ursula’s base layer dress so far. That is what 225ft of rubber exercise tubing looks like in dress form!

Better photos to follow…

The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black

At last I’ve decided on the track to accompany the costumes on the catwalk at the ECA Fashion and Costume show!

One of my favourite bands, one of my favourite tunes, with just the right measure of tongue in cheek while still being wholly appropriate to the themes of the design, all this AND a great beat for the performers to move to!

I’m pretty goddamn excited to see this all coming together!

Very pleased with my ebay purchase for Gaston! I was planning to do a bit of work on them, but now I feel I shouldn’t go messing around when they are fantastic as they are!

Basic sketch to use as template for trying some proper illustration concepts. I always tend to like my pencil sketches more than the finished articles…. time to break that mould!
Trying to add some variety in the poses and composition too. Not that you can tell from this pic, admittedly! Proper scans to follow.

Now the making begins! It was incredibly difficult selecting which costumes to make but these are my winners…. and I now have 3 out of 4 models confirmed too!

In the performance my lovely models will be playing out a sort of love triangle between Gaston, Amaranta Ursula, and Aureliano. She enters the stage in a different costume and is slowly stripped down to her black underneath layers by Aureliano as he seduces her through dance…. well thats the general idea, I will need the help of these wonderfully talented performers to turn it into reality!

Poor Rebeca will be dancing alone… in her stoic widowhood.

The finished costumes will be modelled in the Edinburgh College of Art Fashion and Costume show in May, and then on display as part of the degree show in June.

Draft design for Melquíades.
I didn’t initially mean for his trousers to look like weighing scales, but I like that they do!

Draft design for (Bastard) Aureliano.
The most insect-like of all the characters. The neckpiece might need toned down a bit, but the idea is to force his head down, as if it has grown around him as he sits stooped over the manuscripts.
